You have questions about driver’s education? We have answers!

Is there a difference between taking a driver’s education course in a public high school setting versus a privatized driving school like Road Scholars?

38 Hour Driver’s Education Course (High School)

Depending on the parish, some parishes may offer a driver’s education course (driver’s ed) in select public high schools. These courses are usually instructed by a facility member such as the physical education teacher or by one of the sports coaches. Due to the limited staff and resources, the driver’s ed courses are only offered during select holiday breaks during the school calendar year. While the high schools incentivize a half school credit, there are some potential downsides that should be considered.

  • The official Louisiana of Office of Motor Vehicles written exam is not administered by the high schools and will have to be taken at the Office of Motor Vehicles.
  • During the behind-the-wheel practice driving sessions, the high schools are required to have a minimum of two or three students in a vehicle with the driving instructor due to requirements set forth by the parish school board.
  • For those who are at least 17 years of age and have the capability to bypass the learner’s permit and obtain a full driver’s license will not be able to do so as the high schools are not approved to offer the official Louisiana Road Skills Driving Test.

38 Hour Driver’s Education Course (Road Scholars Institute of Driving – Driving School, Driving Academy)

There are many benefits to choosing a privatized driving school especially if it is Road Scholars:Institute of Driving – Driving School, Driving Academy.

  • We specialize in driver’s education for both teens and adults. Our curriculum is constantly updated to provide our students with the most recent and accurate information with regards to the driving laws in Louisiana, nationwide traffic safety guidlines and vehicle safety regulations. While some privatized driving schools meet the bare minimum for state licensing, our instructors work closely with various driver safety organizations in helping to eliminate the everyday dangers such as impaired driving, distracted driving and improper driving behaviors that many drivers face today. While not every beginning teenager or adult driver will have the same learning curve, our instructors have been trained and continually train in being able to handle various driving behaviors, student personalities, and driver disabilities.
  • Another benefit when attending our driving school for the purposes of taking a driver’s education course is that we provide both the state written test and the state road skills driving test. This means that our students will not have to worry about having to be tested when visiting the Office of Motor Vehicles when obtaining a learner’s permit or driver’s license.
  • When it comes to the behind-the-wheel practice driving sessions, we provide our students with one on one driving instruction with the driving instructor. Although the high school driver’s education program may allow a group of friends to participate in the behind-the-wheel driver training together, there are several drawbacks to group sessions that we avoid. For privatized driving schools, that law states that we are allowed no more than two students per driving instructor within a vehicle. However, our students have the peace of mind knowing that there is not a competition among peers of their own. Also, with one on one driver instruction, our students do not have to worry about being judged based on their level of experience and understanding. Some parents may have a concern with having a young daughter in the vehicle with a male driving instrucor, we definitely understand and respect these concerns. In situations where parents may prefer the driving instructor to be of the same gender as their child, we have both male and female instructors and can accommodate.

Driving is a privilege that should be taken very serious and students are urged to ask as many questions needed to fully understand any and all material. If a student has any sort of disability that should hinder them, please notify our office prior to enrolling.

Is there a delay time from the driver’s education classroom setting to when someone begins the behind-the-wheel practice driving sessions?

Every driving school is going to have some sort of delay time. However, unlike many driving schools that focus on reaching maximum capacity for each class, we try to keep the student-to-instructor ratio relatively low to avoid extended driving delays. Our driving instructors work closely with each family’s schedule when it comes to completing the driving sessions. Inclement weather can delay our student drivers and cause delays within the driving instructor’s schedules.

In order to maintain an affordable, cost-effective price for each student and his or her family, the wait time can take as long as a few months but will not exceed the state deadline of three (3) months for our adult students and four (4) months for our minor students.

Please be mindful that the summer along with holidays are considered the busy seasons so we encourage families to consider the wait during these times when enrolling in a driver’s education program.

What kind of vehicles will the students learn to drive on?

Road Scholars: Institute of Driving – Driving School, Driving Academy provides late-model sedans equipped with dual control brakes and an automatic transmission. Having our training vehicles set up with a dual brake system provides student safety, and allows each of our driving instructors more opportunity to direct the student’s driving, which allows our student drivers to learn more effectively. Also, our training vehicles are logged with GPS tracking units that record time, date, and vehicle speed in real-time. As a safety measure, we also have mounted front and rear camera systems that record audio and video for quality and training purposes.

What happens if the student arrives for a driving session without the Temporary Instructional Permit (TIP) card?

The student must have his or her Temporary Instructional Permit (TIP) card that was issued by the Office of Motor Vehicles for each behind-the-wheel session. If a student arrives or is picked up and does not have the Temporary Instructional Permit (TIP) card on hand, the behind-the-wheel driving session will be canceled and the student/parent will be charged a $50.00 cancellation fee to cover the instructor’s cost. This fee will be required before the next scheduled session can begin.
